the small stuff

Sometimes when the world feels a little overwhelming it’s good to get back to the small stuff. Making dinner, planting mums, simple fresh cut flowers for the kitchen table, all help with the centering thing. Lifestyle, baby, lifestyle.

All photos from the iPhone, all taken quickly. Swordfish is from last week Thursday, Barefoot Contessa, mums were planted on Sunday, really thought it was too late in the season and kind of wanted to skip it, husband gently insisted, funny how when you do those things they are expected, and hydrangeas bought at the grocery about forty-five minutes ago.

Fashion news has been all over the place and with that gorgeous women with incredibly long thin legs in loose jeans and fabulous shoes.

Here’s to all that and the small stuff.

Every day dress. 🙂

the quick fix

IMG_5010DSC01824 DSC01825 DSC01826 DSC01827

Thinking that the most comfortable outfit ever would be a tee, jeans, and a cashmere v-neck sweater. Works for both men and women.

Thinking that the classic combination of grey and camel is always comforting.

When you are in need of the quick wardrobe fix, fall back on the above.

While traveling home from Europe after eight or nine days, can’t really even remember, needed/wanted a quick comfortable wardrobe fix. Nothing quite like airport shopping. Really wanted to pay 35 pounds or 50 euros or whatever it was for the deluxe lounge with the bedroom and shower to change into the new stuff but ran out of time. Picked up three new quick pieces at London Heathrow Zara. Have been living in them ever since. Put them on, take them off, put them on.

Black short-sleeved v-neck tee, you can never have enough of those. Jeans, how many pair do you all own, this time in black-coated cotton. Kind of the look and feel of leather yet machine washable and way less expensive. Grey cashmere v-neck sweater, never go wrong with that. Zara, you made it easy and how do you do it at those prices?

While we love and lust for our real deal luxury items, sometimes we need/want the quick fix.

Tee, jeans, and sweater, the quick fix. Strong classic accessories always a good idea.

would you wear this?

You’re thousands of miles away from everyone you know, celebrating all good things with the love of your life, and having dinner in the countryside of France. Would you wear a transparent lace tank with a beautiful opaque silk bra underneath?

One of my younger by the decade and in the know friends at lunch awhile ago suggested I follow Yolanda Foster on Instagram. Yolanda’s big message is #getwise or ‘get wise, keep your romance alive’. Yolanda is gorgeous, loves her kids and loves her man, and inspires you to drink lemon water, I know, another post and topic altogether. Anyways, Yolanda has some great basic life messages, check her out, and thank you Jamie.

As for the outfit? The flat leather boots grounded it, you can’t wear a heel of any kind while walking on centuries old cobblestone, and, when wanting some coverage simply snapped up the matching cardigan. Very demure, right?

French phrase at the end of the night, ‘l’addition s’il vous plait’.

Get wise, keep your romance alive. Love life and every day dress. Would you wear this?

boston to madrid, and then to france

It’s been a while dear readers: last two posts were put up eleven days ago from Boston Logan International Airport. Since then every day dress has been so many places and walked so many miles, feel like those bike racers in Madrid two weekends ago.

Finally wrote the first draft of this post from Saint-Emillion France after the first 48+ hours of travel and 48+ hours in Spain and now I know why certain CNN commentators say blogging was so five years ago. Took forever to do anything, especially photo uploading, and posting almost impossible. Instagram can push your content before you are even ready and have you second-guessing and taking it back. Twitter might be great, tried that but hasn’t caught on here for me.

Most will tell you that traveling can be both glamorous and a grind so here are a few visuals. Wore first daughter’s distressed boyfriend jeans while in Boston, seems like forever ago, and, yes, changed to black Ponte pants, tank and jacket, for flying through the night, added the belt to give the look a little definition, and then to black lace dress for dinner, all in Spain.

For short flights looking great while wearing a skirt or dress is easy to pull off. Not so much for transatlantic, therefore the black pants with stretch. Slip on and slip off boots for getting through security and slipping off easily to stow under the seat in front of you. Every day dress flies coach most of the time, has a thing for buying handbags and since money doesn’t grow on trees need to make choices. Oldest daughter tells me she would forgo business class for a Lady Dior too. 🙂

It’s Wednesday, September 25th, back in the US and back at work. Travel opens your eyes and refreshes your soul. Looking forward to sharing fashion and lifestyle notes again and hoping to inspire women to every day dress. Need to get over the jet lag. Everything in time.

xoxo

airport to dinner

DSC01299DSC01304DSC01307DSC01313DSC01314

We’ve all been there, work all day, booked for a late flight out, flight delayed, then straight to dinner. Your clothes need to count. When you’re running and handling your own luggage you need to be able to move fast. Of course you could do blue jeans or black pants, sleeveless tee and jacket. Why not a skirt that zips and unzips up to there? Seems to be that when you put on the skirt you gain instant credibility and a good table at the restaurant. Why is that? Significant and rhetorical.

For Buffalo NY to Boston MA wore long black skirt, sleeveless appliquéd tee, and favorite push up sleeves jacket. Flat boots that slip on and off for security check through a necessity.

Luggage? That’s all. Leaving town for nine days, Boston, Madrid, Paris, and all points in between on the agenda. Love to pack light and be able to handle all the stuff when on your own, never know where you might find yourself.

For airport to dinner relied on that favorite friend, black. As you can see daughters love it too.

Every day dress airport to dinner and onwards to Spain.

the leather leg

image

Vogue and Harper’s Bazaar are of course the monthly must read but what’s been really enjoyed lately is the Wall Street Journal, Personal Journal, and here it really resonates. Wednesday’s edition summed it in so many words that what’s needed to update the Fall 2013 wardrobe is leather. Husband wishes I would read more of the financial news.

Couldn’t agree more. Picture shown here was snapped by colleague Mary Collins on my iPhone this past week Tuesday while in NYC for fashion preview. Notice the leather leg, and here it’s not just for kids. Women, why not add a little leather? It stretches, feels good on your skin, and humans have worn it forever.

There is leather out there for all. Whether you choose the leather leg, the leather embellished tee, or go full on with a leather dress or leather skirt suit, don’t be shy, the leather look is not just for kids.

Footnote: wore flat leather Chanel Boy Boots purchased many seasons ago and the Manolo Blahnik BB pumps for work meetings are tucked safely in the Céline bag. Can’t possibly get through 14 hours in NYC with heels on.

Second footnote: can you notice the balding on the pony hair calf on the front of the bag? Purchased this bag last September in Florence Italy and the pony hair has worn thin, thoughts? Céline is now producing this bag with a full leather back and pony hair on the front side only.

Third footnote: check out the red lace dress in Bergdorf Goodman’s window. 🙂 The red lace dress is big for sure.

Every day dress does the leather leg while in NYC last week Tuesday for in and out work meetings.

the new dark

DSC01251DSC01254DSC01272DSC01275DSC01277DSC01278Every season or so it’s a good idea to update the makeup. Keeps things fresh. Keeps one motivated to put it on before facing the world, professional or simply runaround day. Putting on some makeup for yourself and others shows you live with intent. Kind of shows that you’re positive thinking, optimistic, and plan on making your day count. All good, right?

Here’s what’s in the fall makeup kit of every day dress: dark nail color, of course, and the new dark is green. Chanel Le Vernis Nail Colour, 591 Alchimie and 601 Mysterious. Have been wearing these for several weeks now and loving the look. Haven’t used the metallic on the hands yet, kind of like to keep the sparkle on the toes only. Makes me nervous to have glitter on the fingertips, dark is enough of a statement.

With the new dark nail gotta have a nude lip. Yes, the big time fashion world shows dark nails and a dark mouth, just can’t get there. Pretty much every time I put the dark lip color on I end up wiping it off before leaving the house. Maybe because the preference is to eat and drink every couple of hours and the dark mouth is way too hard to keep up? Picked up two, never enough nudes, Chanel and the new Marc Jacobs. Chanel is Rouge Coco 55 Icône and Marc Jacobs 112 Severine. Both so easy to wear and to reapply often, even without a mirror.

The advice for women as they age is to move away from powder blush and into a cream. Looks more natural on mature skin, find that concept mature skin kind of funny, but decided to add two to the regime. Le Blush Crème De Chanel in 61 Destiny and 63 Révélation. Product is super easy to use and goes on best with the fingertips. Darker in the hollow, brighter on the cheek.

Eye shadow and liner are the best. Do the eyes well in the morning and they can last all day. To keep the green thing going have been using the new quad by Chanel: Les 4 Ombres,  43 Mystère. Always throw those miniature brushes that come with it upon opening and use instead a proper eye shadow brush or the fingers. This one here, which is super great and gifted to me by my mom, Chanel Eyeshadow Blender 19. Highly recommend it. Black eyeliner, pretty much all time favorite, and picked this one up at Sephora with the Marc Jacobs launch. Thought I was purchasing the pencil and came home with the liquid. Oh, well. Haven’t quite gotten the hand of it yet so still using the MAC pencil, not shown.

Chanel has done some heavy promotion with respect to their new product, Les Beiges, Healthy Glow Sheer Colour. They’re introducing it as a new makeup approach. From the poster size brochure Play It Your Way. Enhance, Brighten or Bronze…and Beyond. It can be worn alone or over foundation and has an SPF of 15. Anything new makeup wise by Chanel and I’m in. Bags and shoes need serious commitment, nail colour and bronzer give a quick fix.

Is it a great new product? Must say absolutely yes. Have been wearing it for several weeks and it saved the face yesterday. For in and out business travel to NYC for the day, put this compact in by bag for touch ups. As the face was done at 5:15 am for a 6:45 am flight and the return was 6:20 pm, it had a lot of touch ups to do. Performed brilliantly. And, no mess. Liquid foundation was put on and left at home in the morning, Les Beiges N° 30 was used for touch ups all day and had me beautifully covered. Felt good.

So, hoping to inspire you if you haven’t already to put on some makeup and to find your new dark, dark or not.

Every day dress does the new dark and it’s green.

simply red lace sheath

IMG_4927IMG_4961IMG_4964

Ordered this dress for upcoming trip with husband and second daughter to Spain, in five days no less, to help get her settled for her semester abroad and to celebrate our 26 years of marriage. Decided at the last-minute to wear it out this past weekend before we leave town.

Was it a little over the top when the men in the room were wearing jeans, expensive suede loafers, and Cucinelli blazers? Not at all. Sometimes it’s fun to wear something that is maybe a little ‘event’ for a night out that is more kind of ‘regular’.  This was a house party, a gift gathering event for the WNY Women’s Foundation, and there were about three dozen of us in all. By keeping the hair dead simple and no jewelry at all the simply red lace sheath felt just that, a simply red lace sheath. Really kind of liked wearing it when there wasn’t any pressure to be wearing the big event look. Much more fun to make it an every day dress.

You’ve probably seen the red lace dress around a little lately, Michael Kors, Dolce & Gabanna, Valentino. This dress here, by Worth New York, is in very good company. Can’t wait to wear it again in Spain, and France, and then again back in the states.

Every day dress is a simply red lace sheath. Wearing the fancy clothes a little more often can be unexpected and fun.

blue blue blue

Weekend has been a blur but a good blur. Started a new program at work: get and be positive, make a plan, make it count, and spent Thursday and Friday making it count. Productivity and new worksheets, just like new books for back to school, felt good.

Friday night husband came home and he wanted out, he worked hard all week too. Had five minutes to get dressed, two teenaged girls that were all tucked in with laptops after first exhausting week at back to school at 7 pm had five minutes too. We all went blue blue blue.

Grabbed all that was blue.  Blue jeans, blue silk top, blue patent bag, blue blanket wrap. Had to be quick, we were all on the go. Sometimes picking one color and gathering everything you’ve got makes it easy to get out the door fast. Nothing new here, simply all wardrobe pieces collected over time.

Hoping everyone had a great back to school weekend.

Every day dress.

back to school is cool

IMG_4907

For a working mom of six, back to school is very cool. Love the kids, love my work.

For back to school runaround wore these pink patent Gucci loafers picked up while traveling in AZ in late June. When contemplating between the always black and this hot pink, husband said pink. Used to wear these loafers when first having kids twenty some years ago. Gucci has reintroduced the shoe to celebrate the 60th anniversary of this iconic style. Love how all great things have a way of coming around. Kind of like back to school. 🙂 Thinking of wearing these with a long below the knee skirt.
