footwear first

IMG_4852IMG_4855IMG_4856IMG_4861IMG_4864IMG_4868So many times, when getting dressed, it’s important to consider footwear first. When your feet hit the mark and have bases covered wherever you are or wherever you go, everything else can pretty much fall into place.

Started with flat tan suede boots. They were fine in the rain and like age seem to get better over time and with a few well-earned scruff marks. Flat sandals with exposed feet don’t seem to feel right once September hits.

Next came skinny jeans. Kept the wash dark and clean as we were headed to a picnic and didn’t want to look too casual. It’s still hot and humid so white linen finished it off.

Yes, it’s transition time and I think the trick is to mix in some fall season things, like suede boots, into your current wardrobe that still needs to be beat the heat. A head to toe summer look feels a little tired and a head to toe fall look is tough to pull off when it’s still in the high 80’s here in the northeast.

Clothes keeping note: instead of expensive dry cleaning and weekly turnaround time, have been machine washing all linen in a front load washer, less agitation that way, short delicate cycle and no fabric softener to keep the fabric crisp. Lay flat to dry and finish with a hot iron and spray starch. Ironing beautiful fabric yourself, much like weeding the garden, can be very therapeutic when life feels too darn fast.

Every day dress and footwear first.

Wishing everyone a safe and memorable Labor Day. xo
