It’s been a cool and wet stretch here in upstate New York and with the arrival in the mailbox of Fall Preview Look Books can’t help but to think about the clothing season ahead.

Dark nail color is a perennial favorite and pretty much feels like a closet basic. Wore Chanel Vamp when it first debuted in 1994. The love affair with dark short nails continues and Essie’s Wicked is a grocery store fashion quick fix. A high fashion look for less than $10. Bergdorf Goodman’s Fall Preview 2013 Magazine shows many models with dark short nails.

That’s the Wicked part of the post. Now for the Boy:

Absolutely crazy for the Chanel Medium Boy flap bag in black Celtic cable-quilted lambskin, on page 95 of the Bergdorf Goodman Magazine Fall Preview 2013. At $4,400 that would be a long distance stretch for the Fall clothing budget, and quite honestly would probably make me a wicked girl if I went there. Going with the Chanel lipstick with the same name; Rouge Coco Shine Hydrating Sheer Lipshine #54 Boy. An easy to wear every day color. A $34 lipstick is easier to plan for than the $4,400 bag.

At $34, you can get the Boy feeling on your face, and with the $10 Essie nail color, you can have the Wicked feeling on your hands. Wicked Boy. Still thinking about the bag.

To hear Susan Plagemann, vice president and publisher of Vogue magazine speak at the Albright-Knox Art Gallery in support of the WNY Women’s Foundation, chose to wear a skirt suit.

Not the usual pick but given the venue and the speaker wanted to wear something a little modern and perhaps a little graphic. This textured print cocoon jacket made me feel on trend in a room of over 300 fashion forward and very well dressed women. Fabric, 100% cotton, and jacket being unlined, made this skirt suit feel easy while the shape and the strong pattern made me feel well dressed. Will probably wear the two pieces as separates, they are strong enough to stand on their own, but for this event a matched skirt suit felt right.

Bag and shoe? You’ve seen those before, plenty. Invest in a few fabulous accessories and wear wear wear. Bag is a little oversized but wanted to have someplace to stow the event program and any other papers that might be distributed. Shoe? The absolutely most comfortable footwear in the closet at present.

Friend and client Wendy loves beautiful clothing, bright colors, does Pilates, has weekly manicures, juggles three kids and cooks things like chicken picatta and asparagus for dinner. Does she wear a size 4, or maybe a 12? No, and doesn’t matter one bit, equal opportunity here at every day dress.

Fabulous skirt she has on? Dressed my seventy-three year old mom in that and Wendy saw it and wanted one too. Sparkles are for all women.

Suggested she pair it with this fabulous silk cowl neck cold shoulder sweater. She took my advice sight unseen and told me to order away. When you have something really special on the bottom and working with separates, best to keep the top half as simple as possible. Cowl neck and cold shoulder add a little more sexiness. She looks great and was thrilled.

Her new black sweater looks good too with the bright coral pant. My friend Wendy is every day dress for sure with her new sweater, fun skirt, and bright pant. Oh, the places she can go.

Wouldn’t it be great to be one of those girls, maybe for five minutes or a day, the fashion bloggers that spend vacation weeks in Greece with a fabulous beach wardrobe, are twenty-six years old and kind of only really worry about what outfit they are wearing next, or totally connected financially, socially, and geographically?

Not happening here at every day dress, have lived here in upstate New York almost forty-eight years. Have had a love of fashion as long as I can remember, rode by bicycle at the age of eleven while parents were out to the neighborhood pharmacy to buy the most current issue of Vogue magazine, and have helped to dress other women since oldest daughter was born, twenty-three years ago.

After a full day of pulling weeds and moving very heavy furniture, chose earth tones to dress the tired body for a lovely dinner with husband and two youngest daughters out in town. Earth tones, really not the wardrobe usual, but loving this bandeau top for a hot summer night. Went with this color, Cinnamon, as like the shoemakers son dressed all the best clients in the first color choice, Carbon or Black, and now the earth tones are left, Cinnamon and Olive, and recently bought them both.

Yes, jeans are still tight, farmer girl at heart, and every day dress wears earth tones on a Saturday night out in the country.

Making dinner and walking outdoors are two things that can make any good day better.

It’s been busy, full house this past weekend and every meal felt like a party. For Wednesday night send-off for Boston College daughter chicken fajitas and spanish rice for six required practically every pan in the kitchen. Dinner for six was the smallest party since last week Thursday.

To keep from going over the edge, getting outdoors, out of the office  and out of the kitchen for a long walk refuels the mind and body for whatever comes up next.

Food and fitness, keep it coming.

For a busy day look chose a longer length black skirt, side ruched tee, and lug soled sandals instead of the requisite black jeans or black pants.

Super easy, yes, it’s mostly black, but it’s a skirt and the longer length made it feel different. Feeling like the skinny jeans have been getting way too much play.

Next, instead of black, will definitely have to move towards another neutral, maybe white.

Every day dress does a longer length black skirt instead of black skinnies. Felt good, and different.

While we love looking at all the online shopping sites and fashion blogs that have maybe eleven brand new essential pieces to pack for the beach, the city, or the country, this here is every day dress and some days we are happy to get a hot shower. New clothes are great, for sure, there is also so much else going on out there that it’s not always practical to buy and pack an entire new wardrobe for a few days away.

Here’s the one new sweater: wore this for traveling out to the country on Saturday, put it on with the yoga pants for Sunday morning coffee outside on the deck, wore it over the bikini poolside when some coverage was needed for drop by brother-in-laws. Put it back on late Monday, back to the city we go, and with one new sweater for this past weekend away, we were every day dressed. Mixed the one new sweater in with all the other wardrobe pieces collected over the years.

Every day dress loves being inspired by all that’s new out there, thank you, also loves having one new sweater to get away from it all in.

When dinner in the country for ten turns into dinner for twenty plus, go with it. Nothing better than serving our country’s future home cooked food.

Have on hand an extra-long picnic table plus one, always have room for extra, half a dozen machine washable table cloths and to be certain at least three dozen cloth napkins. Stacks of flatware, plates, canning jars for fresh-cut whatever, and plenty of glassware goes without saying.

A little busy and hectic up front, it’s fun to cook and serve home made-mac and cheese, pasta broccoli, green beans, roasted potatoes, tossed green salad, rib eye, tenderloin, chicken, chocolate chip cookies, fudge marble cake and ice cream? When you have generations for Memorial Day weekend or even any day in particular, go for it, put out the dog even in the most casual way, and watch your dinner guests enjoy themselves and the company of all those around them. So worth it.

Every day dress wishes everyone out there the confidence to cook home cooked food for dozens, to extend an extra invitation when not always certain, and to go for it in general.

Ten plus ten. Cook it and they will come.

White jeans, always a basic, and dressed up fitted long-sleeved navy tee, didn’t take long to get dressed for dinner out with the big group. Added last year’s sandals and a bright red bag, Memorial Day weekend after all, and to keep it just a little off put a soft butter yellow leather jacket over it all. Kind of like when things aren’t always perfectly matched up, keeps it more interesting.

New distressed jeans from last post? Already gone. That didn’t take long either. Second daughter claims she doesn’t have any jeans, really, and needed them for her night out.

Good thing the feeling for the weekend is not always perfectly matched up, keeps things more interesting for sure.
